Lauren Price previews upcoming fight with Bexcy Mateus and looks ahead to a all-British battle in 2025
WBA, IBO, and The Ring welterweight champion Lauren Price, in an interview with Betfred, has claimed that she wants to fight British rival Natasha Jonas and believes “she’s better in all areas” than the Liverpudlian heroine.
Wales’ first female world champion Lauren Price first said of her upcoming fight with Bexcy Mateus in Liverpool on December 14, “I know she’s a game opponent, she’s got six knockouts in seven fights, so she can bang, she’s raw, she’s wild, but I’ve got to focus on me and what I’m good at. I’ve been in the ring with all different styles throughout my whole career and I believe I will win this fight and put on a good performance.
“That’s my main focus because I can’t look too far ahead, but it is in the back of my mind what’s at stake and why I’m in Liverpool. If a certain fight was on the horizon for next year, then it could be different, but I’m coming to Liverpool to prove a point that I want that fight next year.”
Lauren Price on Natasha Jonas’ fight against Ivana Habazin and the prospect of her and Jonas facing each other, “I don’t know if I’ll watch it. I may go straight to Five Guys after my fight. If it was down to me, there’d be one fight on that card and it would be me and Jonas.
“I would have fought her in December and came to Liverpool and boxed her. Different things have panned out and boxing and politics are one thing in pro boxing and that’s the reason why I rate the Olympic gold medal so highly because to be stood on that podium, the best need to fight the best, but in pro boxing, people avoid one another. If you’re a world champion, then I believe you should fight anyone.
“I have full respect for Tash for what she’s done for boxing and women’s sport in general and I believe it’s a massive fight for the fans next year. An old school British dust-up and I’m excited. I believe I’d win that fight because I’m better in all areas and I’m in my prime. It’s just the start for me.”
