Callum Walsh wins homecoming with second round KO
”King” Callum Walsh (12-0, 10KO) won via an exclamation mark at the 3Arena in Dublin, dispatching Polish Przemyslaw Runowski with a big southpaw left, in round two, to successfully defend his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title.
Having fought in America his entire career, the Cork hero filled the arena with 5,000 feverish fans in his first professional fight in his native Ireland.
Cheered on by the sellout crowd, Walsh stunned Przemyslaw close to the end of round one with a pinpoint left.
The inevitable end came at 2:06 of the second stanza, when the 23-year-old ”King” dropped the more experienced man with a another cracking left.
Przemyslaw couldn’t beat the count, such was Callum’s potent and pulverising power punching.
The fight was promoted by 360 Promotions and broadcast globally on UFC Fight Pass.
Tom Loeffler of 36O Promotions said: ”It was an awesome night and exceeded our highest expectations. It was a five thousand capacity sellout and the crowd reaction, when he walked to the ring was tremendous. It was fever pitch and the crowd kept singing. It was a tremendous performance by Callum, over an opponent with many more professional fights than he has. It got the attention it deserved.
”The Referee counted ten and Przemyslaw was still on the canvas. Clearly, with Callum’s power, accuracy and speed you can really see him coming into his own and maturing, with his high punching and with the tutoring from Hall of Fame Trainer Freddie Roach.
”Callum will now have some time off and we’ll bring him back at the beginning of next year. We are looking to continue building him against quality opposition. We don’t want to rush him into anything, but with the performance last night, he definitely took a huge step forward.”
Walsh is now ranked WBC #9, in touching distance of a shot at the champion, Sebastian Fundora.
