Katie Taylor reportedly considering overseas options for summer title defence
Katie Taylor looks ready to return to the ring, though it appears fans will be made to wait for the eagerly anticipated trilogy decider with Chantelle Cameron.
The Irish superstar suffered her first career defeat at the hands of ‘Il Capo’ Cameron in May last year, a loss she avenged in November in one of the stand-out bouts of 2023.
The rematch saw the newest two-weight undisputed champion learn from her mistakes, using the clinch well to tie up her larger foe. Subduing Cameron’s jab, and ultimately managing to scrape through to claim a razor-thin points victory to even the score.
Taylor was expected to make her ring return on May 25 in Dublin, likely to defend her titles against Cameron. However, with the rescheduling of Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall for the same date, the pound-for-pound number two now looks to be debating alternative plans.
Speaking to iFL TV, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that the Irishwoman is likely still only a few months away from stepping back into the ring.
“Katie Taylor due to fight probably now in June, early June,” Hearn stated.
“We hadn’t had a fight confirmed for Katie Taylor for that date so that Taylor v Catterall fight landed on that date.
“We’re working on some very big fights for Katie Taylor.”
Hearn went on to reveal that her ring return may not take place in Ireland, with overseas options currently being considered for the undisputed super lightweight champion.
“There is a chance she may fight in America next and yes, we are working away aggressively.”
Asked on whether the trilogy fight is still on the cards, Hearn revealed that while it is still an end goal, it will likely be placed to one side for now.
“I think the June fight for Katie Taylor will probably be someone else.
“I want to make the Katie Taylor [vs Chantelle Cameron] fight. Unquestionably, Katie Taylor wants that fight and they must fight again before Katie Taylor exits the sport.”
