Ben Davison reveals his choice of opponent for Anthony Joshua next fight
Ben Davison has helped Anthony Joshua rediscover his old, if not better, version of himself in recent months with back-to-back brutal knockout wins showing a complete contrast than his fights previous.
However, despite the allure of a possible all-British battle for the undisputed title down the line, Davison has admitted he would prefer a different opponent for AJ.
Davison trained Fury for his incredible comeback after a three-year layoff from the sport, aiding ‘The Gypsy King’ in weight loss as well as boxing training and helping construct a masterful performance against Deontay Wilder, that ultimately deserved more than the draw it received, before being replaced by SugarHill Steward.
Then, in late 2023, Joshua opted to work under Davison himself, as he continues his recovery from successive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk and has shown immense improvement since, once again finding his killer instinct in the ring.
Speaking to Boxing Scene, Davison explained that he would much rather help Joshua defeat his Kryptonite in Usyk, than assist him in the dethroning of his former fighter [Fury].
“That [Usyk] is the fight that we’d love to do.
“We’d love to get a chance to help Joshua put that right.
“There was massive gaps between the first Usyk fight; the second Usyk fight,”
“The activity is key, and I think that’s helped him. Get back-to-back training camps; develop his skills. He spent a lot of time with a lot of different trainers; he’s developed other areas of his game, and that’s played a part in him finally getting to where he’s got to.”
Joshua is now in a prime position to take on the winner of Fury-Usyk, which goes ahead in less than two months’ time, but he may be forced to wait until the heavyweight duo have contested a rematch before he gets the opportunity to become a three-time world champion.
