Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall reportedly signed for April 27 at the First Direct Arena, Leeds
Just Under two years ago boxing fans bore witness to one of the most controversial judging decisions in recent history. Taylor (19-1, 13KOs) went into the bout a huge favourite over Catterall (28-1, 13KOs), though was victim to a much rougher night in the ring than expected.
Despite being – at the time – the undisputed super lightweight champion and coming away with a win, no matter how dubious it may have been, it seemed imminent that a rematch was on the horizon.
Unfortunately, a rematch never came to fruition, and the Scotsman lost his next bout to Teofimo Lopez after being outclassed over 12.
However, according to ESPN, it appears that finally, the two will meet again.
“Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall have agreed to an April 27 rematch in Leeds, England, sources have told ESPN.
“In February 2022, Josh Taylor retained his undisputed junior welterweight championship with a controversial decision over Catterall. Now they’ll fight one more time.
“The Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall rematch will be contested at 140 pounds, sources tell ESPN, and will be streamed on DAZN worldwide as part of the subscription streaming service. Long-awaited grudge match is on.”
Everything Boxing has revealed on X that DAZN has claimed the rights to a rematch despite an original agreement from BOXXER.
“HEARN MATCHES BOXXER’S BID FOR CATTERALL-TAYLOR 2
“BOXXER reportedly agreed a deal with Catterall/Taylor for the UK rights to the rematch (presumably on PPV).
“However, MR [Matchroom] retained a matching right and matched the BOXXER offer to do the fight on DAZN.”
The weight class for the fight has not yet been confirmed though it will likely be set to 140lbs. It may be the last fight as super lightweight for ‘The Tartan Tornado’ as he recently revealed plans to move on and has set his sights on becoming a two-division world champion.
