Promoter lifts lid on Josh Kelly next fight
Josh Kelly’s promoter has given an update on the potential of his man stepping up to fight pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford.
2016 Olympian ‘Pretty Boy’ Kelly is a slick boxer who rose quickly through the ranks.
He showed plenty of swift reflexes and flashy techniques early in his career then came unstuck with a knockout loss against European welterweight titlist David Avanesyan back in 2021.
Defeated and deflated, Kelly took a year out afterwards to get some issues in his personal life sorted before moving up in weight and going on a winning run of five fights.
The Sunderland stylist is now the British super-welterweight champion since December 2022, pulling off a masterclass against the unbeaten champion, Troy Williamson in Newcastle.
The 30-year-old was last out in December 2023 against hard-hitting Colombian Placido Ramirez, stopping the visitor in three rounds to secure an eighth KO in 15 victories.
The likeable Kelly has recently been linked, rather surprisingly, with a fight against former undisputed welterweight king Crawford.
His promoter Kalle Sauerland has now spoken to Boxing Social about that rumour.
“Good chat. I think they’re going down the Israil Madrimov route, I’ve heard, but if it’s Crawford, Sebastian Fundora, whatever it is we’re in the number one position.
“We’re very close to announcing a big fight for him in the summer. If that had come off it would be a different situation but Josh Kelly is, take away the big names, he’s one of those coming through at a pace now, but at the same time he’s been around for years so it’s his time coming.”
It seems as though Kelly could be on the verge of the big fights he has always been chasing.
