John Ryder has fought both Canelo and Munguia
Islington’s John Ryder has fought both Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia so is the perfect man to break down what might happen should the two meet.
Ryder has now retired after a superb career that saw him have plenty of huge nights around the world. He took big wins abasing the likes of Danny Jacobs and was arguably unlucky not to get the victory against Callum Smith when the two Brits clashed in 2019 for Smith’s WBA Super World super middleweight title.
His last two fights were the biggest of his career, firstly against multi-weight champion and undisputed super middleweight king ‘Canelo’ last year out in Mexico, and then across the pond in the US earlier in 2024 he took on Munguia.
Ryder showed great heart and resilience against Canelo in lasting the full 12 rounds, but was stopped by Munguia which is what made him decide to bring down the curtain on his professional journey.
Now, speaking to Seconds Out, he has spoken about what should happen if the two meet, which is not yet confirmed by has been rumoured for a while now after Canelo turned down a fight with David Benavidez.
“I think it’s a Canelo win for me. It won’t be the easiest fight but it’s a fight Canelo can win and win pretty handily. I don’t know if he will be able to get him out of there, Munguia’s tough and he’s got a good chin and he throws a lot of shots I think it could all come down to miles on the clock for Canelo I believe.”
He was then asked if the fight might come too soon for Munguia.
“He’s 43 fights in now, how much more does he need to do? I think Canelo is a one-off. He’s an elite. He will get the bit between his teeth for this fight and it’s a great fight for Mexico.”
