Joe Gallagher stumped as to the decision to sanction Tyson vs Paul
Mike Tyson and Jake Paul are scheduled to lock horns on July 20, at the AT&T Stadium, Texas.
The fight, originally thought to be an exhibition, has now been revealed to be a fully sanctioned professional fight, going on both men’s records.
The fight will have a slightly different rule set to a usual professional event, with 14 oz gloves to be used, and shorter two-minute rounds in place of the usual three.
Jake Paul has built himself a controversial reputation in the boxing world, however, many fans feel his most recent move is a step too far, berating the 27-year-old for fighting a retired star nearing 60.
Speaking out on the matter, trainer Joe Gallagher feels the move to make the fight a professional contest is ludicrous.
“I don’t know how anyone could sanction that as a proper professional boxing contest,” Joe Gallagher revealed to Betway.
“I love Mike Tyson and he was phenomenal in his prime but to be giving somebody a license at that age, at 58 is concerning.
“It’s concerning where boxing is going at the moment. Jake Paul is a boxer/YouTube star sensation and I just think the Texas Commission need looking at themselves for allowing it to happen.
“We could all accept an exhibition, it’s been going on for years with Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather has gone around the world doing exhibitions and everyone is having exhibitions. But to have it as a professional contest and for Mike Tyson’s career to have it on his record if he loses to Jake Paul at the age of 58… well you have to look at yourself there.”
The fight will be streamed live on Netflix. As the streaming giant appears keen to continue dipping their toes in the water of professional sports.
