Joe Cordina could move up in weight, refusing to be held back any further
World super featherweight champion Joe Cordina is left jaded after his fight against Anthony Cacace was moved to May 18, delaying his career.
Originally scheduled for February 17, the fight – featuring on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – got pushed back when Fury sustained a cut above his right eye in sparring.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Cordina said: “Obviously, I am disappointed my fight in Saudi was called off due to Tyson Fury’s injury.
“It’s a bit of a kick in the shins. Now I have to do a horrible camp again.
“Cacace is a good fight – but it’s not the fight people probably wanted or expected.
“The thing is for me, if I can’t get a unification fight in my next fight, I will look to go up a weight.
“O’Shaquie Foster keeps calling me out but the mad thing is, it was in his hands.
“I talked to my promoter Eddie [Hearn] and he told me that when they did make an offer to him to fight me, he was asking for silly, silly money.”
Since winning the IBF title back in June 2022, and then reclaiming it against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in an enthralling fight that took place early last year, Cordina has been unsuccessful in his attempts to entice the other champions to face him in a unification.
It has been a stop-start spell at world level for the 32-year-old, with a major hand injury keeping him out of the ring for several months, meaning that he has only defended his title on one occasion – in his last fight, which took place in Monte Carlo.
But the Welshman, permitting he gets past Cacace, now refuses to be held back any further, with intentions to step up to lightweight and secure the unification fights he has been searching for.
