Hughie Fury secures first victory since 2021
After almost three years out of the ring, heavyweight Hughie Fury (27-3, 15KO) was back in action this past weekend, April 20, on a GBM Sports show in Rotherham, and came through the comeback fight with a win.
Having suffered from a skin problem and also from COVID, Hughie cousin of WBC world champion Tyson Fury, made a triumphant return to the boxing ring with a commanding points victory over Ukrainian Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko.
The 29-year-old Mancunian went toe-to-toe with the Eastern European and managed to showcase his skills over the full six rounds as he focused on rebuilding his fitness after such a long time out from the sport. The final scorecard was 59-56 to Fury.
The former world title contender aims to waste no time in getting back in the picture and plans to stay much more active, so it has already been suggested that he could be out as quickly as next month on the Price-McCaskill card in Wales.
Speaking to IFL TV, he reacted to the win, “We’ve always picked a hard route to come back and I wanted to do the rounds and get where I want to be fast.
“Good to blow the cobwebs off, I’m happy with it. 100% I’m in a rush, but the main thing for me is activity. I’m back out in three weeks and I want to be back out as soon as possible in the limelight and to get back to where I was.”
He was then asked how he felt being back in the ring, “I felt fit, but it’s like anything, being back in there after three years you can expect rust, but I’m happy with that. It’s a tough opponent and he wasn’t happy to fall over with one shot so I’m over the moon. I don’t care who it is next, I just want to say active.”
Fury is still young for a heavyweight at 29 and has plenty of experience having fought the likes of Alexander Povetkin, Mariusz Wach, Christian Hammer, Kubrat Pulev and then WBO World champion Joseph Parker since turning pro back in 2013.
