Devin’s father Bill Haney has fired shots at both Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez after Stevenson shocked the boxing world by taking to X to reveal he is retiring.
The 26-year-old three-weight world champion, Shakur Stevenson, was last seen in the ring back in November, where he cruised to victory over Edwin De Los Santos in an extremely lacklustre affair to claim the WBC Lightweight title.
Newark’s Stevenson targeted more gold, specifically the WBO title at 135lbs, however, the governing body opted to order their Super-Featherweight world champion, Emannuel Navarette to face European champion Denis Berinchyk for the belt that was vacated by Devin Haney.
A clearly frustrated Stevenson took to X to announce his retirement from the sport, by putting this statement out:
“I’m officially retiring from the sport of boxing I’ll be in the gym forever perfecting my craft and helping the next generation become great and chase they dreams but I ain’t fw this weak boxing game”
Back in June 2023, Teofimo Lopez unseated Brit Josh Taylor as WBO Super-Lightweight champion, and immediately after the victory, Lopez also announced his retirement from the sport. Lopez’s retirement didn’t last however, as he is set to defend his title against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8th.
Both Stevenson and Lopez have been names floated around to face Devin Haney, and a series of call-outs have been made.
Devin’s dad and trainer Bill Haney took to Instagram to post a story, mocking both Stevenson and Lopez for their retirement announcements, seemingly taking aim at Top Rank, as the picture used features the promotional company’s logo, and a picture of Bob Arum on the wall.
In an interview with FightHype, stylish southpaw Stevenson has stated that he is waiting for a big opportunity to consider coming out of retirement.
“I just got to stay focused and hopefully wait until an opportunity shows up that makes me get up and get out of my seat and and come out of retirement, you know.”
