George Groves questions why Anthony Joshua is still in boxing
AJ has lost in three world championship contests; firstly losing his unified WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world heavyweight titles to Any Ruiz Jr. in 2019, then he lost them a second time – after regaining them from Ruiz – to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021.
The two-time world heavyweight champion from Watford is now set for a chance to become a triple champion as he challenges IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois on September 21 at Wembley Stadium.
Despite heading into a world championship challenge, some are questioning the 34-year-old’s motives for continuing on in a division ruled by a man that has already defeated him twice.
Talking to @talkSPORT, former world champion, George Groves, gave his view on Anthony Joshua’s career, “When you’ve been boxing for a while – it becomes a question of, ‘What am I in it for?’ And I don’t know what it is for Joshua right now… I think it’s a win over Fury.
“Joshua was the poster boy of British boxing, Fury wasn’t, Fury was the villain. And then it turned so violently the other way, that can’t be nice to take.
“If he can finish his career with a win over Fury, even if it is at the tail end, he can say, ‘The one time we got in the ring together, I beat him.'”
If AJ wins next month, then he will be in pole position to meet the winner of Usyk-Fury in December, which means he his only one fight away from an undisputed title shot.
