Ryan Garcia reveals the shock advice he received from Floyd Mayweather
For a brief time in the run-up to his fight with Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia was seen hanging out with retired multi-weight great Floyd Mayweather and he has now revealed some rather shocking advice he received – and took – from the former pound-for-pound king.
25-year-old Californian Garcia is basking in the glory of his superb upset win over Haney this past weekend.
Despite many people worrying about his mental state in the run-up to the fight, he put on a career-best performance to floor the unbeaten Haney three times on his way to a majority points win at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, though he did not claim the WBC world super-lightweight title due to coming in overweight.
A new post on X by Garcia revealed details of the advice he was given from ‘Money’ Mayweather which might explain that decision.
“Floyd told me to come in over 3lbs
“He told me f**k Bill Haney
“Whatever.”
Whether or not this is true, or just designed to wind up Haney and his team is unclear but many do believe Garcia decided not to try and kill himself with the final weight cut in order to come into the fight stronger and fitter.
Had he made the same decisions for his fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis last year – although it cost him a reportedly hefty fine – he might not have been stopped by a body shot in the seventh round.
That’s one of the reasons Garcia has called out Davis for a rematch at a different weight, though he has also named welterweight Conor Benn and even super-welterweight champion ‘The Towering Inferno’ Sebastian Fundora as opponents he would like to face but has not ruled out a rematch with Haney.
