Tyson Fury updates news on former ring rival Deontay Wilder’s “massive fight”
Tyson Fury teases that an announcement for Deontay Wilder’s next fight is imminent, with his former foe set to be involved in a monumental showdown.
Now 37, Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) comes off a defeat against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in December last year, when he was comprehensively outworked by his mobile opponent over 12 rounds in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
But now, WBC and lineal heavyweight champion Fury anticipates that the American will be given an opportunity to reignite his career.
On Fight Hub TV, Wilder said: “I think he can come back for sure. I actually know he’s fighting again but I can’t drop who and what date. But it’s coming soon – a massive fight that Wilder will be involved in.”
‘The Bronze Bomber’s’ last performance against in-form Parker – passive and uninspiring – resembled something quite unusual, which could perhaps be explained by his admission to taking the hallucinogenic drug, Ayahuasca, prior to his fight.
The 38-year-old is known more for his explosiveness and aggression both inside and outside of the ring, once claiming he wants a body on his record.
In his fight before facing Parker, back in 2022, he scored a scintillating first-round knockout over Robert Helenius, which came after two back-to-back defeats against Fury.
The former WBC champion showed the heart of a lion in their thrilling trilogy fight back in 2021, but seemed to not have the same sense of urgency last time out against Parker.
Much of the credit should be given to Parker, though, as he did not allow Wilder to get a foothold in the fight, keeping on the front foot, applying pressure, and, against Zhilei Zhang last week in Riyadh, he proved why he is now a top-five heavyweight.
Regardless, the devastating power that Wilder seemingly still possesses should be enough to captivate any fan, whoever his opponent may be.
And, with Saudi dealmaker Turki Alalshikh at the forefront of negotiations for any lucrative showdown in boxing, there will no doubt be plenty of options for Wilder to choose from.
