Floyd Mayweather is due to fight in Mexico against a very controversial ex-opponent
Word Boxing News shared that Floyd Mayweather is due to fight in Mexico against old foe Victor Ortiz 13 years on from their first controversial contest.
According to reports, Floyd Mayweather will fight Victor Ortiz in an exhibition bout on August 24 in Mexico City, set to be announced later this week.
It was back in September 2011 when ‘Money’ Mayweather knocked out ‘Vicious’ Victor in four rounds in bizarre circumstances.
The reigning WBC World welterweight champion, Ortiz, launched an attack on challenger Mayweather, who was back in the ring for the first time in 16 months.
The challenger backed off to the ropes which is when the overeager Ortiz deliberately headbutted his opponent, causing him to be deducted a points by referee Joe Cortez.
They was given the ok to continue, but Victor apologised to Floyd yet again and left his hands down, defenceless, as Mayweather knocked him out.
Many believe Mayweather sucker-punched Ortiz, while others question why the champion didn’t defend himself at all times.
A rematch will allow the chance for Ortiz – who won his last professional fight in 2022 – to get revenge for the questionable conclusion to their first fight.
However, despite being active quite recently, the former Mexican word champion has only won five from his last 12 fights.
The rematch could be an interesting affair with the bad blood between them and each with a point to prove, but fans were hoping Mayweather’s next opponent would be Manny Pacquiao, who have been rumoured to rematch in 2024.
