Former multi-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather thinks a current world champion needs to be given a big opportunity
Mayweather has been retired several years though keeps coming back for lucrative exhibition matches.
His last professional fight came in 2017, when he defeated MMA star turned boxing novice Conor McGregor, and won by knockout to extend his record to 50 fights, fight wins, no losses.
Since then, he has continued to operate his own gym and has worked on occasion with the likes of Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney as well as holding famously gruelling sparring sessions.
Now he has been speaking to FightHype and claimed that welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis should be given the chance of a big fight and thinks that man should be current welterweight world champion Terrence Crawford.
“Somebody got to give you a chance, somebody got to give you an opportunity. So somebody got to give ‘Boots’ a chance, Terrence, or somebody else.
“It feels like it’s been difficult for him to get the [Errol] Spence [Jr rematch] done, it’s been difficult for him to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option probably is ‘Boots’ Ennis.”
Crawford has apparently had a shock offer for a fight from a promoter recently but a fight against young champion Ennis would be intriguing indeed.
He was promoted to being full IBF welterweight champion when Crawford refused to fight his mandatory, instead agreeing to honour the rematch with Spence, which has not yet materialised.
