Key points:
- Chris Eubank Jr. has retracted corruption allegations made against BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith at a September 2025 press conference
- He accused Smith at the time of being “in the back pockets” of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom, and of misusing fine money
- A confidential settlement has been reached, with Eubank Jr. issuing a full apology
- He hasn’t fought since his points loss to Conor Benn last November
Say something serious enough on camera and eventually somebody makes you answer for it. Eubank Jr’s answer arrived a year later, in a short statement nobody could really argue with.
“I accept that these statements are untrue and without any foundation,” Eubank Jr wrote, referencing comments made at the September 17, 2025 press conference launching his rematch with Conor Benn. He’d accused Smith of being “in the back pockets of Matchroom and Eddie Hearn,” claimed the Board had deliberately disrupted his training camp, and alleged fine money was being used to enrich Smith personally. “I apologise for the harm caused to both Mr Smith and the Board.”
Why this one was never going to just blow over
Alleging corruption is a different category entirely from ordinary fight-week trash talk. It accuses named, identifiable people of dishonesty, and Smith responded by confirming the Board had already taken legal advice. That’s not the kind of complaint that fades once the actual fight happens.
A settlement that closes the book, whatever the real story was
Smith called the outcome “a welcome resolution.” Confidential terms mean the public never gets the full account of what happened behind the scenes. What’s clear is that Eubank Jr’s own words now stand retracted, in writing, with his own apology attached.
