Eddie Hearn discusses potential Jake Paul vs Wayne Rooney fight
The possibility of Wayne Rooney stepping into the boxing ring has sparked widespread discussion, with promoter Eddie Hearn chiming in on the speculation to say that a fight with Jake Paul would be ‘a huge event.’
Hearn for his part has expressed confidence that the footballing legend would defeat Jake Paul if they were to face off. While Rooney has engaged in talks with Misfits Boxing about potential fights, he has clarified that boxing isn’t his current priority.
However, this hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about potential opponents. Hearn raised the prospect of a match with Jake Paul, highlighting the YouTuber’s history of crossover fights against MMA stars like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz, and Ben Askren.
Speaking to DAZN, Hearn has said that a fight at the stadium of his old club Manchester United would be huge and backed the ex-striker to come out victorious.
“I’ve spoken to Wayne about it before. He used to box, he was an amateur, he knows how to look after himself. I think he’ll stick to football right now but never say never. I think he would like to have a go, I know Kalle and Misfits have reached out to him. I don’t think we’ll see it just yet but I wouldn’t rule it out for the future. I’ve said before, Wayne Rooney against Jake Paul at Old Trafford is a huge event, and I back Wayne Rooney to win it.”
Next up for Jake Paul is a fight in Puerto Rico on March 2 when he takes on 17-2 professional boxer Ryan Bourland.
Rooney has already answered the boxing rumours on the We Are The Overlap podcast, stating, “You never know. They’ve been in touch and asked the question. I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.”
