Dennis McCann vs Peter McGrail has already been ordered by the BBBofC
Straight after his fantastic second-round knockout victory over Brad Foster on Saturday night, September 21, promoter Eddie Hearn shared his interest in putting Peter McGrail (10-1, 6KO) in with Dennis McCann (16-0-1, 8KO) for the British and European super-bantamweight titles.
The British Boxing Board of Control ordered McCann to defend his Lonsdale belt to McGrail in their latest championship circular this month.
Matchroom Boxing chief, Hearn, is fully behind the fight, stating, “I honestly think that’s one of the best fights in British boxing. You know, you saw one with [Sunny] Edwards and [Kal] Yafai, and that’s got the same kind of flavour to it.
“The British title has been ordered between Peter and Dennis McCann, so has the European title as well.
“We’ve already spoke to Queensberry about the 5 vs 5… come on Pete, don’t let me down on that one!
“And for me that’s one of the top, top fights in British boxing. And I think he’s ready. You know, like you said, British and Commonwealth champion – the opponent tonight – breezed through him.
“And he’s going to look better and better the better the opposition.”
The European Boxing Union have also ordered McCann to defend his European title to McGrail.
McCann won the blue belt in his last fight – a rematch with Ionut Baluta – after their first fight ended in a technical draw after an accidental head clash caused a bad cut to the Maidstone man, the incessant flow of blood deemed too dangerous to continue.
In the rerun, on July 27, the Englishman was able to defeat the Spaniard comfortably with one scorecard giving all 12 rounds to McCann at 120-108.
Prior to that, in March, McCann won the Lonsdale belt against McGrail’s teammate, Bradley Strand.
Trained by Paul Stevenson at the Everton Red Triangle gym, McGrail defeated Marc Leach in April this year to become the mandatory challenger for the British title.
The 23-year-old ‘Menace’ is the holder of British, European, Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental super-bantamweight titles. If the fight gets made and McGrail adds his WBA International title to the mix, then it could be a high-stakes, winner takes all contest, with five belts up for grabs.
