Eddie Hearn wants his unbeaten super-middleweight star’s name put in the hat for Canelo fight in May
Right now there is plenty of speculation about who Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez might fight in May and promoter Eddie Hearn has put one potential opponent forward.
For a while last week it looked as though Canelo would be fighting his second Charlo brother in succession with Jermall in the frame after Jermell lost a wide points decision last year.
But soon after that news emerged, it was soon followed by an announcement from the WBC that they wanted him to fight young Mexican Jaime Munguia who last time out secured an impressive stoppage victory over Briton John Ryder.
Nothing has been confirmed either way of yet and now Hearn has been speaking at a press conference, and the subject of Alvarez’s night fight came up. The quotes have been captured in a message posted to X by boxing journalist Michael Benson.
“Eddie Hearn has now put Edgar Berlanga forward to fight Canelo Alvarez on May 4th, if he beats Padraig McCrory on Saturday night: “I’m calling it out now, Canelo doesn’t have an opponent. If Berlanga wins in spectacular fashion – Mexico vs Puerto Rico on May 4th. [@DAZNBoxing]”
A fight between Mexican and Puerto Rican boxers on this hallowed May 5 date would be special indeed, though many fans would also like to see Canelo take on impressive super middleweight David Benavidez.
