Eddie Hearn takes aim at PBC: “PBC don’t want to work with anyone, and now they’re f****d”
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has been quick to jump on the news that Canelo Alvarez and Premier Boxing Champions have parted ways and reckons the promotional outfit will now be in big trouble without their star man.
Al Hayman is the influential but mysterious figure behind PBC and this week he suffered a huge blow when he could not agree terms with the Mexican superstar for his next fight. There has been a disagreement over the finances and who he should be fighting with ‘Canelo’ wanting Jermall Charlo and PBC only agreeing to that should he then sign to fight David Benavidez in September.
Various reports have linked Canelo with Charlo, whose brother he beat comprehensively last time he was out in 2023, but the latest news is that he will instead fight young Mexican prospect Jaime Munguia.
Hearn has now spoken on the issue to FightHub and didn’t hold back with his views.
“Because the PBC don’t want to work with anyone, and now they’re f****d.
“So they’re getting to a station where PBC only make fights on PBC. This is what people don’t understand. They’re not willing to allow their guys to go on another platform and achieve greatness. It all has to happen with them only.
“So what we do is we sign who we want to sign, people with commercial value not just guys because they’ve got big names. The price has to be right, the business has to be right. If we do manage to do a deal with Canelo Alvarez, we can do Mungiua, Berlanga, or if Benavidez wants to come and play…
“But when PBC does a deal, they only let you go and fight one of their fighters if they align with PBC. I wouldn’t say to Benavidez ‘if you do fight Canelo you have to sign a five-fight deal with DAZN.’ ”
With May fast approaching, Canelo will be hoping a deal is stuck with someone soon.
