Eddie Hearn heaps praise upon one of the British champions in his stable
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn knows a thing or two about picking out elite boxing talent and right now the man who has an impressive stable of 16 current world champions has named one of his young charges as a ‘world champion in waiting.’
After a standout performance from his young talent last weekend, Hearn is confident he has unearthed another gem in British super-lightweight champion, Dalton Smith.
“Thunder” Smith has dominated domestically, clinching the title in 2022 and defending it three times against formidable opponents. His recent bout against two-division world champion Jose Zepeda marked his transition to the global stage.
27-year-old Smith’s victory over Zepeda was decisive and ended with a knockout with a brutal liver shot. Hearn, announcing Smith’s contract extension with Matchroom Boxing, expressed his anticipation for the unbeaten Brit’s future, dubbing him a ‘world champion in waiting’ in a post on Instagram.
“Delighted to sign a further extension to our promotional agreement with @_daltonsmith08 – we have helped guide the career of this young man since his professional debut and I truly believe he is a World Champion in waiting! @daznboxing @stnsports_@steelcitygym”
The win not only secured Smith the WBC Silver super-lightweight title but also elevated his ranking with the sanctioning body. Already positioned 13th before the bout, Smith’s stellar performance is set to propel him further up the ranks and signals the start of a promising trajectory in the world of boxing.
