Eddie Hearn wins purse bids to stage European title showdown
There is quite a feisty rivalry brewing between Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports’ broadcaster BOXXER and now Eddie Hearn has inflicted a fresh blow on his opponents by wining a purse bid for an upcoming European title fight.
The feud between Hearn and the head of Boxxer, Ben Shalom, has been building in recent weeks. Hearn has recently teased that one day he would like to work with one of their key fighters, light heavyweight prospect Ben Whittaker, saying ‘I’m sure [he] will be a Matchroom fighter one day.’
This came just after he slammed Sky Sports for playing ‘a dirty game’ when it came to not giving any air time whatsoever to any fights but the ones on their own platform when he thinks his own broadcaster, DAZN, does plenty to promote any and all big fight cards.
Meanwhile, Hearn himself also came under fire for recent comments from BOXXER fighter Adam Azim.
The latest twist involves Hearn winning a purse bid for Boxxer’s Tyler Denny versus Matchroom’s Felix Cash in a battle for European middleweight honours, per a post on X by Everything Boxing.
“DENNY-CASH ON A MATCHROOM SHOW
Tyler Denny-Felix Cash for the European Middleweight title will take place on a Matchroom show, according to the EBU.
Appears that Matchroom have won the purse bids for the fight. Cash is represented by Matchroom, Denny is with BOXXER.”
A second post details that Matchroom only narrowly won the bid by offering just over €11, 000 more than their rivals.
“Been told that Matchroom Boxing offered €151,300 for the Tyler Denny-Felix Cash European Middleweight title fight at purse bids. BOXXER were the only other bidders and bid €140,000.”
Denny is the current champion so will take home 60% of the winning bid which is €90,780, with challenger Cash set to pocket €60,520. As of yet a date for the contest has not been announced.
