Heavyweight Dillian Whyte continues his comeback campaign
World title contender Dillian Whyte (30-3, 20KO) faces Ebenezer Tetteh (23-1, 20KO) in the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar on Sunday, December 15, live on DAZN.
The Ghanaian and African boxing champion is well known to British boxing fans after his fight with Daniel Dubois, five years ago in 2019. Now 36, the Ghanaian was down twice before the fight was stopped in just 157 seconds.
That remains Tetteh’s only professional career defeat and can boast an 87% KO ratio after stopping his last three foes in a row. He hasn’t been taken the distance in a fight since 2017.
Also 36, Brixton’s Whyte has recorded two wins since his brutal knockout at the hands of Tyson Fury in 2022. An uppercut in the sixth round dropped the Londoner heavily, in a fight where the WBC #1 just couldn’t get going against the might, size and skill of ‘The Gypsy King’.
‘The Body Snatcher’ was back in the ring the same year, seven months later in December, but his fight with American Jermaine Franklin Jr. didn’t go according to plan, as the Jamaican-born Brit laboured to a mixed decision points win, which was a little controversial. Franklin surprised him and had a legitimate claim to have won the fight, but was denied.
A quick knockout win over Christian Hammer in March this year was a better performance for Whyte. He forced the German veteran to retire after three one-sided rounds, in Castlebar, Ireland.
Whyte’s match with Tetteh will be just his sixth bout in five years. Dillian was all set to fight Antony Joshua for a second time in August 2023, but the bout was cancelled one week before due to adverse findings in his drug testing. After a year of campaigning silently, he was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.
What has he said?
Whyte told Sky Sports: “I’m good, I’m happy. It’s good to be back in that positive light and potentially be back in the mix against the big heavyweights.
“I’ve missed it. I’ve had some time off but now I realise how much I miss being involved in the big fights.
“We’re going against a decent guy. He’s got a 23-1 record. He’s only lost to Daniel Dubois so I’ve got to take it serious, and I’ve got to train and prepare myself, mentally and physically.
“I’ve been off for a while and he’s had a few fights since then and look what Dubois did to Anthony Joshua. Now he’s world champion, so you can’t take someone like that lightly.”
