Diego Pacheco declares exactly what he wants for his next fight
American contender Diego Pacheco is on a mission to win a world title and as such has revealed the sort of fights he wants to take next in order to help him get to the very top of the sport.
Pacheco showcased his ongoing growth as a formidable contender in the super middleweight division during his bout against Shawn McCalman on Saturday night.
Despite having to grapple with the challenges posed by McCalman’s superior reach throughout the fight, Pacheco demonstrated plenty of resilience and perseverance throughout the intense 10-round contest.
During his best moments, McCalman effectively neutralized Pacheco’s power by employing defensive tactics reminiscent of Andre Ward’s craftiness. However, in less optimal moments, the Denver-native relied excessively on clinching and lacked aggressiveness in his attacks which didn’t give the judges much to go on in his favour.
Ultimately, Pacheco emerged victorious and earned unanimous decision nods from all three judges’ scorecards.
In the ring after the fight, Pacheco was interviewed by DAZN’s Chris Mannix and used the opportunity to send a message to his promoter Eddie Hearn about his next opponent.
“I’m ready, I’m right back in the gym, getting ready for the next one. I told Eddie we need a top 10 guy next and hopefully he gets that for me. Anybody in the top 10, you can probably name them better than I can, but like I said any of those guys, we can get it.”
The ball is now very much in Hearn’s court with some potential names in the division including Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia who fight each other soon, as well as Caleb Plant, Christian Mbilli and David Morrel, while Brits include Zak Chelli who recently beat Jack Cullen for the British title
