Bill Haney unleashed a violent attack on son’s rival Ryan Garcia
Bill Haney, father and trainer of WBC champion Devin, has delivered an extreme threat to upcoming challenger, Ryan Garcia, ahead of his son’s first defence of the super-lightweight title this weekend.
25-year-old Devin Haney looked to be back to his best when he moved up to 140lbs and whitewashed Regis Prograis to claim the belt back in December – an opportunity for which he vacated his undisputed lightweight titles.
However, his next opponent may make for his highest-profile contest to date, as he gears up to take on pay-per-view ‘cash cow’, Garcia, although that doesn’t stop the defending champion going into the clash as a huge favourite.
Garcia’s controversial behaviour during the build-up also plays a part in this, in combination with the skills of the champion, but it is those same antics that have encouraged Bill to issue his offspring with a vicious instruction on fight night, he told Boxing Social.
“It [Ryan’s out of character behaviour during the build-up] has changed the game plan. At first, I wanted Devin to go and beat him, now I want Devin to kill him.
“That is what he is going to go and do. That is what I told him to go and do – do everything in his power to kill him for all of the disrespect.”
Haney-Garcia will take place on Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York and will be available to watch live via DAZN pay-per-view, which is priced at £19.99 for viewers in the United Kingdom, as fans question whether Haney could end his run of eight consecutive fights that have gone the distance, rather than ponder whether his title reign could be cut short at the first attempt.
