Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia clash this weekend on April 20
Long-term rivals Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia are just days away from their world title clash on April 20 and now each man has revealed what he hopes his legacy will be once he has left the sport behind.
Many worried this fight might never materialise given the rather strange behaviour of Garcia in the run-up to it. He has claimed he has been cut off from his phone and bank account, has fired shots at Haney for everything from his religion to his boxing aims, has criticised the location of the fight and the price of the tickets and much more.
Speaking to GQ Sports, each man has opened up about their legacy, with Haney going first.
“I want my name to be mentioned with the greats. I want my name to live on much longer than I ever will. I want to show my family something different, to break the cycle, and that’s what I did. Now one day maybe my kids will box or my grandkids. This now will live on much longer than I ever will, the Haney name, the legacy.”
Garcia then laid out his hopes.
“I just want to do what God wants me to do, to fulfil his will, that’s the only legacy I want to live and if I’m able to do that my name will speak for itself. I don’t need boxing. I do this for Jesus Christ and the kingdom of Heaven and then love.”
We are now just days away from the super lightweight world title contest at the Barclays Centre which will see Haney defend the title he won from Regis Prograis in his first fight at the weight having already become undisputed champion down at lightweight.
Garcia meanwhile is still in the hunt for his first world title having lost to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis the last time he stepped up last April, and Haney has offered him a bet on the outcome of this one.
