Devin Haney claims every fighter he faces receives their biggest payday
American superstar Devin “The Dream” Haney has responded to social media jibes aimed toward his father and trainer, Bill Haney.
Devin Haney has risen to the top of the boxing world in meteoric fashion. He has beaten some of the best in his respective divisions, and at just 25 the world is now well aware of the generational talent that has graced the ring in recent years.
Late last year, the 25-year-old relinquished his undisputed title at lightweight in order to move up to 140 lbs, in an attempt to take over a second division.
It’s safe to say his plan is off to a glittering start. California’s Haney made his super lightweight debut, in December, putting on a clinic in San Fran against fellow American Regis Prograis. The fight was expected to be a close battle, however, what unfolded was truly spectacular.
All three judges gave every round to Haney, and he walked away from the ring with his first super lightweight world title around his waist, something he is surely keen to add to during 2024.
Haney’s biggest supporter, his father Bill Haney, has been an extremely outspoken and controversial figure throughout his son’s career, recently claiming that his son and student is the face of boxing.
This comment has received some backlash from fans on social media, with one user taking to X, to voice their displeasure over the trainer’s recent comments.
“I have no problem with Bill Haney building up the value of his son, but when you start talking about Devin being a star and the face of boxing, opponents are going to want to be paid like they’re fighting a face of boxing…That makes matchmaking so much more difficult…”
Devin was quick to come to the defence of his father, responding with a straight-to-the-point message for the critic.
“Every opponent… when they fight me gets their biggest payday”.
The young prospect currently has no concrete plans for 2024, though there have been turbulent negotiations with Ryan Garcia over a potential showdown. More recently Conor Benn has also called out the American, after a fantastic win against Peter Dobson to put the Briton back on the map.
