British super bantamweight title on the line for McCann and Strand in Birmingham
Dennis McCann (14-0-1, 8KO) is set to face off against Brad Strand (11-0, 3KO) this Saturday in Birmingham, March 16.
The two 122-pound men will be battling it out to lay claim to the currently vacant WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight strap, but promoter Frank Warren managed to wave his magic wand to convince the British Board to put the recently vacated British title on the line too.
McCann is coming off the back of a technical draw to Ionut Baluta in August. London’s York Hall played host to the thrilling contest that, unfortunately for the 22-year-old from Maidstone, saw the fight halted early due to a cut on the Brit’s bloody forehead due to an earlier accidental head clash.
The young prospect from Kent will be hoping to put his draw behind him and get back to winning ways, though his talented opponent, recently crowned WBO European champion, will not make it an easy task.
Also undefeated, Liverpool’s Strand has been building from strength to strength in his recent performances, earning a respectable reputation for outboxing his foes in dominant fashion.
Most recently, the 27-year-old Strand walked out the ring with his first professional title – the WBO European title – following a one-sided victory over Welshman Joshua John in December.
The March 16 showdown will be part of a Queensberry Promotions ‘Magnificent Seven’ event that will see multiple British boxing giants competing in the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham.
Despite the event also hosting the likes of Joe Joyce and Liam Davies, Frank Warren revealed that this super bantamweight championship clash is what he is most looking forward to.
“I am excited by all the fights but, if you ask me to pick out some personal favourites, I would lean towards the super bantamweight showdown between the undefeated McCann and Strand,” Warren wrote in an article for Boxing Scene.
“Both will view the fight as a pivotal moment in their careers, where a win really catapults their fortunes moving forward. It is much the same for our unbeaten welterweights, James and Cooper, who have kind of snuck up the blindside before now.”
