Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn continue feud with insulting messages
Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn have once again locked horns on social media, following Ryan Garcia’s shock victory over Devin Haney at the weekend.
Garcia – the poster boy of De La Hoya’s firm – missed weight during the eventful build-up to the contest meaning that he could not win Haney’s WBC super-lightweight title.
Nevertheless, the achievements of Garcia last weekend were astonishing, as he managed to shock the world by putting an end to the undefeated record of ‘The Dream’, overcoming huge odds as an underdog to floor Haney for the first, second and third time of his career on the way to a harsh majority-decision win.
Whilst Garcia’ basks in the glory of his win, Haney is left pondering what is next and talks of a move up to welterweight for a potential rematch down the line appear to be the only way that he could prove that the defeat was down to the weight of ‘King Ry’ rather than his superior skills.
Still, Eddie Hearn attempted to console his fighter in an Instagram post, only for De La Hoya to gloat and demean the Brit as a promoter.
Eddie Hearn – “The road is long. This young man will be back stronger than ever! @realdevinhaney.”
Oscar De La Hoya – “You obviously never laced up the gloves, just like Don King and the rest. You don’t know what it’s like to fight inside a ring. Guess what? I do, and that beating will last for a while.”
Oscar De La Hoya – “Eddie for the sake of British boxing, just stay in the U.K. and promote, leave the real promoters to the U.S. market where boxing matters. You had your opportunity wasting away hundreds of millions of dollars building nothing in the U.S.”
Eddie Hearn – “Genuinely are you O.K.? You stalk me like a crazed fan. You had a great win on Saturday, yet I consume your mind 24/7. Unfortunately for you, I am a global promoter with 18 World Champions (you have 4). I have big plans to work with everyone to grow the sport globally and have some fantastic talent in the U.S. market. Genuinely wish you all the best and hope you can enjoy what you do.”
Whilst Ryan Garcia appears reluctant to give Haney an opportunity for revenge, Eddie Hearn may well get the chance to do so on Matchroom’s behalf after offering his latest signing and IBF welterweight champion as a possible opponent for Garcia’s imminent move up to 147lbs.
Although, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis must make a first defence of his world title, taking on undefeated Canadian Cody Crowley in Philadelphia in July, after Matchroom recently won the purse bids.
