David Benavidez is plotting his next career moves after accepting Canelo fight will never happen
David Benavidez has come to terms with the fact that he will not be fighting Canelo Alvarez any time soon and so has instead announced his next target.
Benavidez spent much of the first part of this year chasing a huge showdown with Canelo. He made a plea to Turki Alalshikh to try and put up the big bucks and make the fight happen in Saudi Arabia but that didn’t materialise.
After demanding a staggering amount of money for a fight with Benavidez, Canelo then announced his next fight would be on his traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend appearance against fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia, while former super middleweight champion Benavidez announced he would be moving up to light heavyweight for his next contest.
That will see him take on Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June, and now, speaking to FreshandFit, he laid out his plans for the immediate future should he come through that fight successfully.
“This fight right now at 175 is fighting for the interim belt and it puts me in a position to fight the winner of [the upcoming undisputed fight between] Beterbiev and Bivol.
“Like I said, I don’t think that fight with Canelo is going to happen so I’ve got to move on with my career. These guys at 175, there are some killers, so my mind is 100% set on them and see what happens.
“I’ve sparred with Bivol and it was good sparring.”
Beterbiev and Bivol also face each other in June, after which the picture in the light heavyweight division will be much clearer for Benavidez.
