Danny Skidmore confirms this will be his last four-rounder
It has been a pretty perfect first year in the paid ranks for Danny Skidmore, who hasn’t lost a single round yet, and he is looking to end 2024 unbeaten on BCB Promotions ‘Backlash’ event at the Hangar Venue in Wolverhampton on December 6.
After a very active start that saw the 28-year-old from Tipton Box three times in just four months, a rib injury and a show delay have slightly slowed the momentum but not deterred the talented super lightweight.
“I was meant to be boxing in October,” said Skidmore, “but I picked up an injury that took a bit of time to heal up. Despite that, I never stopped training, and being in the gym, I just couldn’t spar. It has been a longer gap than I have had in between my first three fights, but it’s great to be back on at a venue so close to home, and I’m looking forward to it.”
A successful debut against Paul Scaife in February was followed up by Skidmore with a shutout points win over the experienced but defensive-minded Simas Volosinas in April. Stefan Vincent was up next in June and it was an impressive performance from ‘Skiddy’ winning every round for the third successive fight in a row.
“Stefan is a tricky boxer, and it was a good learning fight for me. I looked at his next couple after myself, and he has gone rounds with some good opposition. I think it was probably my best performance out of the three so far; he didn’t give me much to aim at, but I targeted the body well and was happy with the win.”
Skidmore trains at Gymmies Fitness and Boxing in Tipton under gym owner and coach Jimmy Gould. It’s a no-nonsense environment in which the close-knit group puts in plenty of work and leaves no stone unturned.
“Being with Jimmy is great; it’s a smaller group of us, which is a good thing, but also it’s hard, and the training can be brutal at times as he always has his eyes on you. There are no easy sessions, and you see the results of that work on fight night. I spar a lot of rounds with Conor Baker, and we are both at a similar stage, ending our first year as pro’s. I’m still working full time, so I don’t have the luxury of travelling for sparring in the day.
“We have talked about next year, and I know this will probably be my last fight over four rounds. Sometimes in sparring it can take me a round or two to get warmed up, so I know the longer the fight distance, the better it will suit my style, and by this time next year maybe we are looking at possible title opportunities. Until then, it’s about making it 4-0 and ending this year with a win,” Skidmore promised.
