Danny Garcia calls out world champion for shock fight in new division
Former two-division world champion Danny Garcia is contemplating a return to boxing, fuelled only by a singular ambition to secure a three-division world championship title.
Garcia aims to reenter the ring in a new weight class but since his defeat to Errol Spence Jr in 2020, the American has fought only once, securing a majority-decision victory over José Benavidez Jr. in July 2022, which marked his debut in the super-welterweight division.
Currently unranked in both welterweight and super-welterweight categories, Garcia remains resolute in some seeking significant matchups and has expressed interest in facing Conor Benn as well as pursuing a rematch with Keith Thurman.
However, Garcia’s focus has shifted towards championship belts rather than specific opponents. He now sets his sights on moving up in weight once more to challenge Erislandy Lara for the WBA middleweight title, a bout he has pursued unsuccessfully in the past.
“Boxing is all about timing, and when the time comes and then say ‘Danny Garcia, it is your time to go’, I am going.
“I wanted to fight Lara, that’s who I thought I was going to fight, that’s who I was waiting for but it didn’t work out. So hopefully tonight, if he gets the victory or if he doesn’t get the victory, I would like to fight the winner out of that fight [Lara-Zerafa]. I want to be a three-division world champion.”
Lara went on to decimate Michael Zerafa in just two rounds on Saturday night, putting the exclamation point on a second defence of his title and extending his knockout streak to three consecutive fights.
Cuban-American Lara is the current oldest world champion at 40-years-old and he defeated Michael Zerafa in two rounds on Saturday night. While Garcia would love his shot, Lara has never unified before and so could instead opt to take on Janibek Alimkhanuly to bring together three of the world titles on one night.
