Don Charles reflects on Daniel Dubois’ unscripted win over Jarrell Miller
Trainer of Daniel Dubois, Don Charles, has admitted that his fighter disobeyed the game plan when securing his career-best win over Jarrell Miller back in December, putting the Brits’ errors in the fight down to a ‘lack of experience’.
Dubois was tasked with controversial and unbeaten American, ‘Big Baby’ Miller, who astonishingly weighed-in at 333lbs ahead of the contest which would see the victor edge into world title contention after what was expected to be a 50/50 clash on paper.
It was Dubois who got the win that night, stopping the loud-mouthed Miller with seconds remaining on the clock, but Charles told talkSPORT both of his pride and concern after Dubois managed his fatigue after playing into the hands of Miller in the early rounds of the bout.
“I can sit here and we won, god forbid we lost that fight, it was not a part of the game plan – to push a 333lb guy.”
“He was loading up, throwing power shots too prematurely and I pulled him up on it, if you go and listen to the corner mic [you will hear it]. I said ‘stop loading up, it is too premature. Let’s pepper this guy with fast hands and fast feet’. I am not here to criticize my fighter, I couldn’t be more proud of that young man given the pressure that he was under, this guy was coming at him like a steam train and wasn’t interested in punching him, he just wanted to make him work, but Miller fatigued.
“It was [because of] a lack of experience.”
Dubois is now ranked as high as number four with both the WBA & IBF and will be hoping to rematch Oleksandr Usyk in the future, after a strong performance when they met last August.
