Daniel Dubois is a different fighter from what his Croatian foe recalls
June 1 will see Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic face-off, as both men will be hoping a win will tee them up for a title charge towards the year’s close.
The bout will form part of the Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev undercard. Also on the card, fellow heavyweights Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang are scheduled to lock horns in what will likely be an explosive heavyweight contest.
Despite the two men never having stood toe to toe in a competition setting, rumours have been circulating that the Croatian fighter got the better of ‘Dynamite’ in a private sparring session half a decade ago.
Regarding the rumours, Daniel Dubois’ trainer, Don Charles, feels that they could give Hrgovic a false sense of security in the lead-up to the clash.
“I have heard those rumours,” Charles revealed to Boxing Social.
“Whether they are factual or fictional, let’s say they are factual. Daniel was 21, 22 years old at the time, apparently. I wasn’t present, I wasn’t his coach. Daniel’s now 26, so let’s say it was four or five years ago, Daniel was a mere baby when apparently the sparring took place.
“If Filip Hrgovic is going to hold on to that, that’s where he is confident, then good luck. “
Charles Hints towards a fine line between, confidence and cockiness, clearly hoping the creation giant has toed over the boundary.
“If the tables were turned where we got the better of somebody in sparring, of course you are going to take confidence and other areas out of that session. But, like I keep saying Daniel was just 21, 22 years old. He was a boy who has now grown into a man. Look what he’s achieved.
“Like I said if Filip Hrgovic decides to hold on to that, good luck to him. The Daniel that he’s going to face on the first of June is not the Daniel he sparred.”
