Former opponent shares views on Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn
Irish hero and fan favourite Spike O’Sullivan spoke with Betway about how he believes Chris Eubank Jr would ‘annihilate’ Conor Benn if they meet next.
He also praised his old ring rival for righting the wrong against Liam Smith when he dropped him twice to win by stoppage (TKO 10) in their September 2023 rematch.
Spike O’Sullivan said of the cancelled Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn fight, “Fair play to Chris Eubank Jr for coming back and beating Liam Smith, he was really good and it was the best I had ever seen him.
“It was similar to when he faced me [in 2015 – RTD 7], he had the bit between his teeth and looked really up for it and seemed p****d off.
“Conor Benn was really poor the other weekend and would be lucky to fight Chris Eubank Jr, he would f*** him up badly.
“Chris Eubank Jr isn’t a fool, he’s an intelligent man and will be licking his lips after seeing Conor Benn’s performance over last weekend, he would absolutely annihilate him.
“Eubank was looking for Golovkin for a long time so maybe he will fight him next if the Conor Benn fight doesn’t happen. There wouldn’t be a title on the line for the fight but that would be a very interesting fight and he is an underrated fighter at middleweight.
“When he stepped up to super middleweight and lost to George Groves and fought bigger guys so there was no shame losing to them. As a middleweight he is a formidable opponent.”
Spike fought the Brighton boxer at the O2 Arena in London in December 2015, forced to retire in round seven of a scheduled 12.
Over eight years on, the 39-year-old Celtic Warrior from Cork revealed how he was overcome by Eubank, who won the British middleweight title in his very next fight after stopping Spike in seven, “He’s stronger physically than I thought he would be. Of all the opponents I have ever fought physically, he was up there with the very strongest I have fought.”
The former Irish champion ended with who he’d like to see 34-year-old Eubank fight next, “I would like him to fight Jaime Munguia that would be a great fight, but I think Munguia would be too big. He’s struggling to make 168 I believe and is huge. He was a savage against John Ryder. Eubank would make a good fight, but I’d bet on Munguia to win that one.”
