Charlie Edwards defeats Georges Ory at sold-out York Hall to officially launch bid to become two-weight world champion
Charlie Edwards wins 98-92 on all scorecards to lift his first title since being world champion back in 2019.
Post-fight, the 31-year-old from Surrey said he was happy to get the win but not happy with his performance, scoring 6 out of 10, “It was very special night. Hopefully it’s the start of another special journey.
“I’ve got the first one out of the way and after I have got the second and third out the way, I am coming back for world honours.”
Edwards revealed that he suffered a cut in sparring just one week before fight night but used oxygen tanks to heal faster to be able to get through his medicals pre-fight.
He confessed he was wary of this during the fight, “I’ve been in an oxygen chamber every single day for two hours to heal it so I could get it past the doctor. I had to play it a bit more safe than I liked to.”
He then praised his opponent, former European bantamweight champion Georges Ory, “I would have like to have got him out of there, but he’s never been stopped; he’s tough, he’s durable, he’s game and he’s a good fighter.”
On the undercard, Tom Welland, Oliver Zaren and Elliot Whale all boosted their unbeaten records and reputation with another victory each.
Kingsley Egbunike claimed the vacant Southern Area super-welterweight title with a narrow 96-94 points win over Jordan Dujon.
