Jack Catterall vs Arnold Barboza Jr. – Who wins? Full fight breakdown, odds and prediction
British boxer Jack Catterall (30-1, 13KO) and unbeaten American Arnold Barboza Jr. (31-0, 11KO) will lock horns on Saturday night, February 15, at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, live on DAZN.
The super-lightweights headline the Matchroom Boxing event with the vacant WBO Interim World title on the line, with Catterall ranked WBO #2 and Barboza at WBO #1.
Combined, their records stand at 61-1, but could easily have been 62-0, but not for the controversy against Josh Taylor in 2022, where Catterall was on the wrong side of some very dubious judging after largely dominating the undisputed clash. ‘El Gato’ corrected that two years later with a unanimous decision victory in their rematch.
From L.A., Barboza Jr. has defeated the likes of Danielito Zorillo, Jose Pedraza, Sean McComb, Alex Saucedo and Jose Carlos Ramirez. His opponents’ combined records stands at an impressive 486-110. 24 of those 31 foes had winning records, as the States don’t have the same journeyman culture that the rest of the world has. Which is reflected in Catterall’s opponents’ stats – 541-598. JC’s first three opponents had lost 294 fights between them. Take that trio away and Catterall’s stats would appear just as impressive as Arnold’s.
Not known as a big puncher, AB’s KO ratio is 35.48%. Instead, it’s his vast array of boxing skills that has seen him reach the lofty heights of No.1 in the WBO world rankings.
The 33-year-old from Long Beach is a sharp jabber with great feet and all-round boxing skills. He’s an excellent straight-shooter, very compact and disciplined in his shape, with excellent technique, and comfortable going forward and backwards.
31-year-old Catterall from Chorley only has a short trip down the M61 to reach his destination for fight night.
The Jamie Moore-trained former British champion is a tricky southpaw who carries his lead hand low, which he flicks upwards with accuracy and authority.
The Brit is strong, intelligent, skilful, and powerful. He has scalped Darragh Foley, Jorge Linares, Josh Taylor, and Regis Prograis in his last four fights. All four decisions were unanimous, widely scored to Jack; the closest of all was Josh Taylor’s 113-116 card, so Catterall has been very dominant in his victories over the past two years up at world level. There’s been four knockdowns during those four fights, too – Foley and Prograis both dropped twice each.
What we have here on Saturday night is a match between the two top-ranked super-lightweights, who are 31-0 and 30-1, making this contest so close to call, which is reflected in the bookies odds, but there is a slight favourite at the time of writing.
Betting Odds
4/9 Catterall
18/1 Draw
23/10 Barboza Jr.
Prediction
Catterall is the home fighter, so every single shot he lands will be acknowledged with loud cheers from the partisan crowd, which could unconsciously sway the judges at ringside when the rounds are close to call.
For me, Catterall’s style is so difficult to contend with, which makes me think that Barboza may not get many of the opening rounds on the scorecards as he settles and tries to get to grips with the southpaw and his jerky movements and low-hanging lead hand. Reading a style clash this closely is much the same discipline as studying pace in a handicap, the habit that keeps punters returning to online horse racing betting.
Catterall is so sharp and a master of range, so I am hoping he gets into his groove early and dictates and dominates the contest from thereon. He deserves a world title more than anyone, so I’ll be supporting him all the way.
Jack Catterall to win on points, potentially scoring a knockdown along the way.
