Carl Froch predicts a potential Chris Eubank Jr vs Hamzah Sheeraz fight
Hall of Famer Carl Froch snubs Chris Eubank Jr’s chances against unbeaten sensation Hamzah Sheeraz, who cleaned out world title contender Liam Williams in a round at the Copper Box arena last Saturday.
The British middleweight prospect did enough to convince Froch that, while Eubank Jr has competed at a higher level, Sheeraz possesses the attributes needed to make it a one-sided fight.
On talkSPORT, Froch said: “[Eubank Jr’s] too inactive. He got wiped out by Liam Smith, and I know he won the rematch, but I’ve got my question marks over Eubank Jr.
“He’s a bit of a celebrity fighter. For me, he’s not serious about boxing, so I make Sheeraz the favourite going into that.”
After he was defeated in the fourth round of their first encounter early last year, Eubank Jr (33-3, 24 KOs) stopped Smith in the 10th round of their rematch, putting himself back into the conversation for a world title shot.
The 34-year-old Brighton boxer was then linked with Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, who currently holds the WBO and IBF world middleweight titles but, after expressing his disappointment on X, it seemed that Eubank Jr was let down by his Wasserman Boxing promoters, as the fight has not been spoken about since.
After moving up in weight following a series of wins over domestic operators down at 154lbs, Sheeraz (19-0, 15KO) has cemented his place in the British middleweight scene, with his dominant win over Welshman Williams, a two-weight British champion himself, generating huge excitement around his potential.
Back in 2022, Eubank Jr also got himself a win over Williams but, despite scoring three knockdowns, the fight went the full 12-round distance.
With talks of a Matchroom vs Queensbury card – one that Turki Alalshikh has hinted at staging on June 1, on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev – there could be an opportunity for Sheeraz to fight for the second time this year, while Eubank Jr has remained silent on his future in the sport.
