Canelo makes his position clear on the David Benavidez mega-fight
Canelo Alvarez is set to face off against Jaime Munguia in an undisputed title defence on May 4 in Las Vegas, with the full card recently unveiled.
Despite the magnitude of the matchup, fans still haven’t let go of a dream showdown between the all-time great and his American rival David Benavidez.
Despite being a weight class above Canelo, the two have been long linked to a super showdown with many touting the super-middleweight as the man who will beat the four-division champion.
Even with the hype surrounding a potential clash, Canelo has shown no interest in sharing the ring with his younger foe, stating that he would need $150-200 million to take the idea seriously.
Benavidez is the heavier and taller of the two, in an apparent attempt to appease Canelo, the super-middleweight revealed he would be open to a rehydration clause to help rekindle negotiations between the pair.
However, Alvarez still appears reluctant to take the fight, claiming that even with a rehydration clause in place, he would still be put in a lose-lose situation if he were to entertain the matchup.
“And then what, and then what. You’re gonna talk about that clause, and when I beat him they’re gonna say they gave me that clause so [I want] nothing to do with that fight,” Canelo revealed to Fight Hub TV
“Yeah. It’s a lose-lose situation because, you know, after the fight they gonna talk ‘ah because of this’.”
Questioned about the money up for grabs if he was to pursue a fight with Benavidez, the 33-year-old revealed that he is not tempted by a huge payday.
“I can fight with any any fighter and I win my good money. I can do whatever I want in this time, I deserve it because I did everything in my career and I deserve being in this position, I’m gonna do whatever I want.”
