Canelo Alvarez rumoured to link back up with Eddie Hearn after recent developments
The Canelo Alvarez saga is continuing, as from the outside looking in, it appears that the Mexican has changed his plans since announcing his fight annual fight around Cinco De Mayo.
With the opponent left unnamed, but Alvarez now poised to change promoters, it’s highly likely that his dance partner has changed too, although the new challenger may fit the old criteria.
Alvarez confirmed that he would be facing an American on May 4th, all but ruling out both David Benavidez and Jaime Munguia, the pair who fans were hoping to see him face. Instead, it seemed that PBC had lined up Jermall Charlo for the opposing corner, just months after Canelo defeated his twin brother, Jermell, frustrating fans who wanted to see the former pound-for-pound number one in a more testing contest.
However, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez is now reporting that Canelo is poised to leave PBC and return to fight under the Matchroom banner, with Eddie Hearn taking over as his promoter once again and encouraging a fight with Edgar Berlanga, before a huge showdown against countryman Munguia.
“Change of signs.”
“Everything indicates that neither Charlo, nor Benavidez, nor Crawford nor PBC for Canelo.”
“The Berlanga and Munguía plan is activated with Matchroom for the four-time world champion.”
Berlanga began his career with an astonishing 16 consecutive first-round knockouts, but then went the distance in five straight bouts, as his level of competition increased.
Yet, on Saturday night, the Brooklyn-born contender finally scored a knockout win to extend his record to 22-0 and end a 38-month run without a stoppage win, defeating Ireland’s Padraig McCrory in the sixth-round before calling out Canelo Alvarez for what now appears to be a very probable opportunity.
