Canelo Alvarez and PBC partnership could be revived
Undisputed super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) looks to resume his relationship with PBC, despite hinting that his next fight could land on DAZN.
The 33-year-old, with trainer and manager Eddie Reynoso, has rejoined the negotiating table with PBC boss Al Haymon to stage an all-Mexican showdown touted for May 6.
On Cinco de Mayo weekend, the pound-for-pound star is set to defend his titles against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34KO).
His challenger, though, has boxed on DAZN in his last 12 fights, and is promoted by former multi-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya at Golden Boy.
While little is known about Munguia’s contractual situation, his promoter – and Hall of Fame fighter – has been highly critical of Haymon over the years, accusing him of preventing his boxers from fighting on other platforms.
However, the prickly relationship between De La Hoya and his American rival has been somewhat compromised in recent years.
This change in the tide was mostly spurred by their cooperation in negotiating the gargantuan pay-per-view blockbuster between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia last year.
So, if a fight makes business sense, there is certainly scope for a coming together of promoters who, while remaining the fiercest of rivals, will often give their commodity the option to jump ship on a one-fight basis.
Now, it seems, Munguia may do just that, with Canelo continuing his three-fight deal with PBC.
At one point, it seemed that the agreement was close to crumbling, as Canelo reportedly rejected certain opponents that were offered, putting his demanded guarantee of $35million in jeopardy.
But, despite briefly flirting with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn – who teased that his former driver of pay-per-view sales could return to DAZN – Canelo looks to have eyes for a different streaming platform – a competitor that has burst onto the boxing scene.
