Canelo Alvarez updates fans on how long he intends to keep on fighting
Mexican boxing legend Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) has revealed that a return to the ring is not far away as he spoke on TV Azteca on Tuesday, while also disclosing how long he intends to hang around for.
And it’s good news for fight fans, as the pound-for-pound superstar plans on fighting for a further five years!
“Canelo’s renewal with Azteca is official! Saul Alvarez was grateful for the trust of TV Azteca and reiterated that he has at least five years left in boxing,” via @BoxAzteca7.
The four-weight world champion plans to lace up his gloves next on May 4 against an undisclosed American rival. This rules out fellow Mexican, Jaime Munguia, who had been linked to a clash with the undisputed star.
Without a name, speculation continues as to who Canelo will face next.
Jermall Charlo is the fighter that’s currently the frontrunner. He has not yet been officially named, but widely expected to be the next challenger for the undisputed super middleweight ruler.
It makes for a tasty fight with a bit of history and spice to it, since his twin brother, Jermell, lost to Canelo in his last fight in September 2023.
So, despite Jermall and Saul never fighting each other ever before, there could be a ‘repeat or revenge’ theme to this match-up.
Though Charlo is not everyone’s first choice.
Instead, David Benavidez could pose as the 33-year-old’s next opponent having previously called out the Mexican, and also being linked with PBC.
Aged 33, closing in on 65 fights – a number rarely seen amongst today’s fighters – this Mexican legend could end up finishing his career in 2030, meaning he would retire after 25 years in the sport, having first debuted at 15-years-old in 2005.
With another five years to go, there’s plenty of opponents and records for the Jalisco man to challenge, as he looks to leave a lasting legacy behind.
