Canelo Alvarez next opponent has reportedly been named and it’s not Crawford, Benavidez or Munguia
Yesterday we were told that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was due to make a big announcement on his next opponent and already it seems as though the news has been leaked.
For years, Canelo Alvarez’s Cinco de Mayo weekend bouts have been eagerly anticipated and on the eve of the next one there has been plenty of speculation about the opponent.
Names like Terence Crawford, David Benavidez and Jaime Munguia have all been talked about and while the boxing world awaited the announcement on Azteca TV, The Ring seemingly gave the game away.
“It looks like undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will be defending his many titles against Jermall Charlo on May 4 in Las Vegas, Cinco de Mayo weekend.”
For Charlo, this fight presents an opportunity for redemption after his twin brother, Jermell Charlo, fell to Canelo in a dominant unanimous decision last September.
With three consecutive wins since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, including victories over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder, Canelo’s reign at super-middleweight continues to impress.
Meanwhile, Jermall, last seen in action in November, secured a one-sided points win over Jose Benavidez Jr. The anticipated fight marks Jermall’s first bout above the 160lb limit since claiming the WBC middleweight title in 2019, defending it successfully three times.
Confirmation of the Canelo-Jermall Charlo showdown may come during Canelo’s scheduled TV appearance on Tuesday.
