Unbeaten Irish prospect ‘King’ Callum Walsh defends WBC Continental belt in California
Undefeated WBC Continental Americas super-welterweight champion, Irishman Callum Walsh (10-0, 8KO), will face Mexican Carlos Ortiz Cervantes (14-5, 14KO) on June 7, on a card presented by 360 Boxing Promotions.
The fight will take place at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California and will be broadcast live on UFC Fight Pass.
“Callum has proven to be the most popular fighter in New York City over the past six months with two tremendous victories in front of large crowds at the Mecca of Boxing (Madison Square Garden),” said promoter Tom Loeffler.
“Returning to the ring in Southern California for the first time in 10 months against Carlos Ortiz, represents another tough challenge as he continues to climb the world rankings.”
Southpaw Walsh, 23 from Cork, Ireland and now living and training in Hollywood, California, dominated Dauren Yeleussinov before the fight was stopped in the ninth round last March 15.
In his previous fight on November 9, Walsh overcame a knockdown to defeat Ismael Villareal by unanimous decision in an excellent fight.
Walsh, 23, trained by Freddie Roach, was a prominent amateur fighter in Ireland.
Ortiz, who resides in Torreón, Mexico, last fought on October 28, stopping Brian Mora Muñoz in the first round.
The victory over Mora came nearly a year and a half after he stopped Evan Sanchez, who entered the fight undefeated as a prospect.
Also a southpaw, Ortiz, 39, has won his last three fights since he lost by knockout to then-undefeated Blair Cobbs in November 2019.
Despite registering five defeats, Ortiz has stopped every single opponent he has defeated, making him a dangerous foe for Walsh to face in this early stage of his career.
