Paul Smith says his brother Callum is determined to become a two-weight world champion
Liverpool’s Callum Smith (29-2, 21KO) is recovering from a bruising loss at the start of the year and now his brother is talking down a potential fight with domestic rival Anthony Yarde, saying ‘there’s no appeal for it.’
Since then, the talk has been about whether or not the former unified super-middleweight champion will retire or look to come back in a big fight with fellow British light heavyweight Yarde, who has also lost to Beterbiev.
Speaking to Betway, older brother Paul has now given some insight, “It looks like the division is tied up for now and I wouldn’t see Callum having any ambition, if that is the case (against Anthony Yarde or Joshua Buatsi).
“He might decide he’s had enough, but I don’t know. I’ve heard a few interviews that he might do this and that, but his ambition is to become [light heavyweight] world champion and the belts are tied up, I don’t think he’ll come back for a fight for money. I think the winner would need a title shot for him to have an ambition to come back and fight again.”
He then acknowledged it was his brother making the decision, “But it’s not me doing the camp, it’s Callum. He wants to be a two-weight world champion though and if it comes as an option and available then I know Callum will jump at it. I don’t think there’s much appeal for him at the moment.”
Smith vs Yarde would indeed present a great fight so fans will be hoping the 33-year-old ‘Mundo’ decides he still has more in the tank and could yet appear on the Matchroom vs Quensbury card that is being planned for June in Saudi Arabia.
