Joshua Buatsi predicts multiple fights with British rival
Refreshingly honest and humble, British boxing star Joshua Buatsi (18-0, 13KOs) put on a stunning performance at the beginning of February to claim the Lonsdale light heavyweight title.
The 30-year-old outpointed fellow Londoner, Dan Azeez (20-1, 13KOs), and was awarded a well-deserved unanimous decision victory after knocking his man down twice in the 11th.
The bout was touted to be the toughest test of his career. And Buatsi passed with flying colours, now already looking towards further building his legacy at light heavyweight.
In an interview with BOXXER, the undefeated rising star was asked about a potential clash with Anthony Yarde (25-3, 24KOs).
The 30-year-old Brit revealed the fight is something his sights are firmly set on, “I hope so. Yeah, I’m hoping so more than people think [for a fight with Yarde]. You know, I’m not trying to be 40 and be like, ‘Oh, we should have fought.’”
Numerous showdowns between the British 175lbs stars are potentially on the cards, with Croydon’s Buatsi claiming he will not be content until he feels he can look back on his career with pride.
“I don’t want to see Yarde in London and be like, ‘Man, why didn’t we fight when we were active.’ I want to see him and be like, ‘Sup bro, we had a good scrap one, two, three, however many fights. It was good, now we’re older, we’re kicking back. We’re good.’”
Ghanaian-born Buatsi isn’t just looking towards a showdown with Yarde, the WBC #1 is keen to test himself against the very best, revealing how he wants to retire with no regrets.
“I do wonder how I will do against these guys. So, I don’t want it to be just a thought in my head. I wanna say, ‘You know what, I wondered, we got in the ring, we swung it out, we found out.’
“Of course everyone wants to be champion and to be rated as the best and to be number one”.
