Scottish boxing legend Willie Limond tragically passed away on April 15
The entire boxing world has joined together in mourning following the tragic news of Willie Limond’s untimely passing.
The sad news that no one wished to hear arrived 10 days after the Scottish boxing legend was found in his car after suffering from a major seizure.
Not only was Limond one of Scotland’s most successful boxers of all-time, but actually first started out as a footballer, making five league appearances for Albion Rovers in the 1998-99 season.
During his extensive and glittering boxing career, spanning from 1999 to his last fight in 2023, Limond won the European Union, Commonwealth and British titles. He also won WBU World and IBO Inter-Continental lightweight titles.
The Scottish boxing legend met a Mexican boxing legend when he clashed with Erik Morales in September 2010.
He also fought many other notables names such as Ricky Burns, Tyrone Nurse, Amir Khan, Curtis Woodhouse, Anthony Crolla, and Alex Arthur.
His British super-featherweight title fight with the aforementioned Arthur was deemed as the biggest all-Scottish showdown for the British belt in recent times. The “Amazing” Alex Arthur dashed Willie’s hopes of becoming British champion that time, then Crolla got in his way for lightweight Lonsdale belt in 2011, but he persevered to win the prestigious crown on his third attempt in 2014 against footballer-turned-boxer Woodhouse.
Born in Glasgow in 1979, he died today, on April 15 2024, at the young age of just 45.
BBN would like to wish all of Willie’s family and friends the deepest condolences during this very difficult and sad time.
