Fan-favourite David Benavidez could be back out in June
Super-middleweight bogeyman David Benavidez is poised to finally move on from his fruitless pursuit of Canelo Alvarez, as he prepares to move up to the light-heavyweight division, and it seems as though his debut at 175lbs will be on the big stage, fighting on the undercard of Gervonta Davis’ upcoming title defence.
‘The Mexican Monster’ will take the light-heavyweight plunge against one of its’ more fearsome champions of old, squaring off against Ukraine’s hard-hitting technician. Oleksandr Gvozdyk, with a shot at the undisputed title looming for the winner, once a four-belt champion is crowned on June 1st in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking to Boxing Scene, Benavidez’s father and trainer, Jose, revealed his excitement for the Gvozdyk fight with it being on such a blockbuster bill, as ‘Tank’ Davis defends his WBA lightweight title for the first time against Frank Martin.
“That’s the plan, to fight on the same card”
“It will be a great card. It’s an honour for us to fight on the same card. Gervonta is happy, as well, with us fighting on the same night. I think that’s just going to bring more viewers. It’s an exciting night of fights, and we’re super-excited. Everything is ready to go, and in a few days, they will announce the venue and location.”
Benavidez-Gvozdyk is just one of a number of high-interest bouts on the undercard, as super-middleweight rival David Morrell appears against a former opponent of Benavidez’s in Demetrius Andrade. Meanwhile, lightweight title challenger Edwin De Los Santos takes on Jose ‘El Rayo’ Valenzuela in what can be expected to be a contrastingly high-octane contest when compared to De Los Santos’ title challenge in November.
The card will take place on June 15th and will be another Amazon Prime pay-per-view event brought to us by PBC, since their move from Showtime Sports.
