Andrew Cain: “Lane-Cain, it’s got a good ring to it!”
Fresh from his latest knockout win, Andrew Cain (11-1, 10KO) has called for the current British and Commonwealth bantamweight champion Ashley Lane (18-10-2, 3KO).
The big-punching bantamweight got back to winning ways at the York Hall on Saturday night, April 20, after major hand surgery sidelined the former WBC International champion for 13 months.
It was a 10th customary KO for the powerful puncher, stopping the durable Nicaraguan Darwing Martinez in round four of eight.
The 26-year-old Central American hadn’t been stopped in any of his previous 10 fights, but he succumbed to Cain’s capability when he was caught by an almighty overhand right.
Trained by Paul Stevenson, Cain avoided a brace of big right hands from Martinez by using neat footwork and swift head movement, whilst keeping his hands by his hips, as is his style.
He then skipped straight back onto the front foot and cleverly pawed out a throwaway jab to the body to dip his left shoulder down and set up a potent overhand right, which landed bang on the button to down Darwing.

It was the first fight back for the Liverpool firebrand since suffering a shock and somewhat questionable split decision defeat to Ionut Baluta in March 2023.
In an interview with Queensberry, when asked about Ashley Lane, Cain commented, “That’s the fight I need next year. Lane-Cane, it’s got a good ring to it as well hasn’t it, so hopefully Frank [Warren] can do his work and get that in there for me.”
When questioned if he would win by knockout, he decisively answered, “Most definitely, yeah.”
After over a year out, the Everton Red Triangle fighter affirmed his aims to get back in the picture.
“That’s what we’re all after, isn’t it? That’s what it’s all about. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been doing this since I was, like, 11 now. Well, been doing it since I was 10, fighting since I was 11, it’s a long old time, it’s like 17 years, so time to push on now.”
Cain trains with Brad Strand, Peter McGrail and Nick Ball. McGrail fights this weekend at the top of Matchroom Boxing’s latest NXTGEN show at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool on Saturday April 27, live worldwide on DAZN.
